What is a Birth Companion?

A Birth Companion is someone who walks alongside a woman throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum by offering education, reflection, encouragement, and support.

A companion is not someone who replaces a woman’s responsibility. A companion does not make decisions for her, carry her accountability, or become the source of her confidence and security. Rather, a companion walks alongside her, offering knowledge, reflection, support, and presence while reminding her of what is most important.

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the importance of righteous companionship and the effect that those around us have on our hearts and our path. Good companionship does not mean someone walks the journey for us. It means we walk alongside those who help us remember Allah, seek what is good, and remain oriented toward truth.

Ultimately, I am not here as a replacement for a medical professional to tell you what you "should" do or not, because decisions like these are based until upon your understanding and assumptions regarding birth, safety, life, death, risk, personal responsibility, etc. I can only help you see why perhaps, you have those beliefs and assumptions in the first place, and share my opinions, and what I know to be true about pregnancy and birth based on my knowledge, understanding, and personal life experiences.
